How to Reset Your CaptureGem Installation
Updated March 27, 2025 by Admin
This guide explains how to reset your CaptureGem application to its default settings, which can help resolve issues or give you a fresh start.
Warning About Data Loss
Before proceeding, please note that resetting your CaptureGem installation will:
- Delete all your application settings and preferences
- Remove your saved model list
- Clear all application data
- Delete all recorded videos (if you did not move the output directory to outside of the config folder)
Optional: Backing Up Your Data
If you want to preserve your current setup, follow these backup steps before resetting:
1. Save Your Configuration
Find and backup your
config.json
file:- Windows: Located in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\capturegem
(or in your CaptureGem installation folder for legacy installations) - macOS: Found in
~/Library/Application Support/capturegem
(or in~/CaptureGem_Data
for legacy installations)
Copy this file to a safe location like your Desktop or Documents folder. It contains your model list and settings.
2. Backup Your Videos
Make sure to save any important recordings:
- Navigate to your video storage location (check Settings tab for current location)
- Copy desired videos to a backup location
- For default video locations, refer to our File Locations Guide
Reset Process
Step 1: Close CaptureGem
Ensure CaptureGem is completely closed:
- Check your system tray (Windows)
- Look in the menu bar (macOS)
- Make sure no background processes are running
Step 2: Find Configuration Directory
Locate your CaptureGem configuration folder:
Standard Locations (Most Common):
- Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\capturegem
- macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/capturegem
Legacy Locations (Older Installations):
- Windows: Your CaptureGem installation folder
- macOS:
~/CaptureGem_Data
Note: If you find both locations, prioritize deleting the legacy location as it takes precedence.
Step 3: Delete Configuration
Once you've found the correct directory:
- Delete the entire
capturegem
orCaptureGem_Data
folder - Double-check that you're deleting the configuration directory and not your video storage location
Step 4: Restart CaptureGem
- Launch CaptureGem
- The application will create a fresh configuration directory
- All settings will be reset to defaults
After Resetting
You'll need to:
- Reconfigure your preferences in Settings
- Add your models back to the recording list
- Restore any backed-up videos if needed
If you backed up your
config.json
, you can restore it by copying it back to the new configuration directory, before opening CaptureGem. However, be aware that this might reintroduce the issues you were trying to fix by resetting.
